invite you to celebrate their wedding

Friday 24 September 2027Palacio de Silvela, Aranjuez

RSVP by 24 June

Where we get married

Palacio de Silvela

Aranjuez, across the gardens from the Palacio Real

The aisle on the lawn of the Palacio de Silvela, leading to its steps, its red-brick front and its slate-spired turret
  1. 1816 · The lawn

    A royal herb garden

Before the palace, this ground grew medicinal plants for the royal pharmacy. By 1845 it was the Jardín de la Botica: four equal beds, facing the Palacio Real.

  2. 1860 · The front door

A house for a Bavarian prince

King consort Francisco de Asís had it built for his cousin, Prince Adalbert of Bavaria, as Casa Baviera. The prince never moved in: in 1868 the revolution sent Isabel II into exile, and the house passed to the Silvela family, whose name it still carries.

  3. 1860 · The turret

    Neo-Gothic, by the court architect

José Segundo de Lema, architect to the royal court, followed Viollet-le-Duc: let every material show what it is and what it does. Hence the turret, the slate spires, the steep roofs.

  4. The windows

    Valladolid brick, Colmenar stone

Red brick from a Valladolid works, framed in pale stone from Colmenar. Neither is plastered over, so the house wears its materials on the outside.

  5. 1936 · The ground floor

    The war years

In the Civil War the house was occupied, and its library and paintings disappeared. Afterwards it was home to the general commanding the Almansa and Pavía regiments, until 1962.

  6. 1966 · The roof

    Fire

By 1962 the house was close to ruin. In 1966 a fire burned its carved wooden ceilings and left it in ruins.

  7. 1979 · The brick

    Rebuilt from its own walls

On 28 December 1979 José Pérez Mardones bought the ruin and rebuilt it, at his own cost, as it had been. The Valladolid brickworks had long since closed, so the 15,000 or so bricks it took came from the estate's boundary walls, built of the same brick.

  8. Today

Grass and heels

Much of the evening is on the lawn. Block heels or flats are kinder than stilettos.

The weekend

If you are making a weekend of it, a few ideas: Aranjuez itself, two easy day trips, and Madrid. Turn a postcard over for the details.
